what is handpoking?

don’t worry, it’s a common question! handpoking is the process of tattooing manually by hand using only a needle & ink instead of a traditional machine. thus, a handpoked tattoo is composed of hundreds of little hand-pushed dots that will create the lines and values of a design.

some commonly asked questions…

is it as permanent as a tattoo made by machine?

yes! although the process is gentler, ink is still being applied to your skin by needle and the end result is just as permanent. handpoking is less traumatic to the skin, which usually results in a shorter heal time.

what are the limitations?

because each dot is pushed by hand, handpoking is slower than machine tattooing - so smaller- to palm-sized- pieces are usually best. larger pieces are doable, but expect a time commitment!

do you use color?

sometimes - handpoking isn’t well suited for large or bold sections of color. i do like adding pops of color into my typical all-black designs.

does it hurt more?

every person is different - however most of my clients are delightfully surprised and report that handpoking is less painful to them than machine-made tattoos.

what styles of tattoos can be handpoked?

handpoked tattoos naturallly translate best through dotwork styles, since each dot is pushed by hand and can be carefully controlled.

do you do coverups?

typically, handpoking isn’t well suited for covering up any existing tattoo. it is delicate by nature, so unless you have something tiny that you would like covered, the answer is usually no.

how much do handpoke tattoos cost?

my minimum hourly is $125, which covers my setup and materials. cost goes up from there, depending on size, design, placement, etc, however i do my best to give you an accurate range of cost ahead of your appointment.

do you use vegan ink?

yes! all the ink i use is vegan. i am very careful about the supplies that i use, and if you have any questions or concerns please just ask!
